How To Choose Your First BJJ Gi

Your first gi is the piece of gear you'll wear every session, so it pays to choose well. Here's what actually matters.

Weave & weight

Beginners are best served by a single-weave or pearl-weave gi (around 350–550 GSM). It's durable, breathable, and light enough for daily training without the bulk of heavier competition cuts.

Fit & sizing

BJJ gis use A-sizes (A0–A5) based on height and build. Too big and it drags on the mat and gives away easy grips; too small and it rides up. Check the brand's size chart against your height first, weight second.

Shrinkage & durability

Cotton gis shrink, so look for pre-shrunk fabric or size up slightly and wash cold. Reinforced stitching at the knees, cuffs, and collar is what separates a gi that lasts years from one that frays in months.

Competing?

If you plan to compete, confirm the cut and colour (white, blue, or black) meet IBJJF rules.
